Food for those struggling with the rising cost of living.

    Who We Are

SWell Hawthorn Community Pantry (SHCP) is a not-for-profit, volunteer-run community group. We are inspired by:

    • Food is Free Blackburn

    • Food for Thought Nunawading

    • Eastern Food Rescue

    • Reaching Out in The Inner West of Melbourne

for their tireless dedication to supporting people experiencing food insecurity and a circular waste free economy.

We promote and support reuse, and food share.

SHCP is for individuals, not for professional collection companies or commercial enterprises.

    What We Do

SHCP aims to divert food waste from landfill and circulate it back into the community. SHCP aspires to build meaningful community connections through respectful use of its pantry and to support Boroondara locals in a meaningful way.

Some Housekeeping Items

A team of volunteers keeps our pantry energised.

Food Donations

We are fortunate to have food donated from major Supermarkets, and other community groups like "It's the Little Things" in Hawthorn, and charity groups like FoodFilled and SecondBite.

Should you wish to donate to the pantry we ask participants to not donate anything which is open, perished or well beyond its expiry date.

Some volunteers take the fruits and produce jam which is brought back to the Pantry. Others take vegetables and make chutney and soup.

Bananas are very popular and we thank the volunteers who take it home, chop it up and bag, and return to our freezer, for others to use for cooking in banana bread, cheesecakes and smoothies.

All donations are done so with good will in mind and with safe food handling processes in place.

Keeping Things tidy

We have three bins next to the pantry:

  • Compost (Orange lid),

  • Recycle (Yellow lid), and

  • General Landfill bin (Dark Green lid).

If you come across some food items that are spoiled then please dispose of them in the compost bin. Please do not put plastic and general rubbish in the compost bin.

Once the cardboard boxes on the pantry shelves are empty please squash them and place them beside the bins. Do not fill the Recycle bin as the boxes are collected and taken away every Thursday by a volunteer.

A special thank you to all who contribute to the smooth operation of this pantry.
